The Secret To Joy

After carrying a heavy weight all throughout my day, I came home and leaned up against the counter feeling dry and restless. My roommate joined me and we started to catch up on our day and before I could even get the words out of my mouth of what I was struggling with she finished my sentence with these words “Are you struggling with joy? Me too.”

As I started to share some of the weights I had been carrying throughout my day, it was evident why I was struggling with joy. I allowed negative thoughts to enter my mind and I didn’t do a good job of protecting my joy.

I opened the door to thoughts that caused me to worry and doubt and then before I knew it, left me questioning everything.

That’s what happens when you don't protect your thoughts, it can lead you so far off from the actual truth.

I was in a weak spot, and instead of fighting for my joy I allowed myself to be consumed with anxious thoughts.

The joy I want to talk about today can't found in people, a place, or a position. It is not dependent on your circumstances or what is going on in the world. It's not easily shaken. It is found deep within the heart of the Savior. This joy is unexplainable. It is constant through every gain and every loss.

Is it possible to live a life of joy every single day? I believe it is.

Here’s why.

Joy is already yours.

You can’t lose joy, you can only stop fighting for it.

Every single day the world is throwing something new in your face with a false promise to bring you happiness.

Don’t buy into the lies. If you are a child of God, you have the holy spirit living inside of you and He promises a fullness of joy in His presence.

"You make known to me the path of life, in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore." | Psalm 16:11

Even on your worst day, one moment in His presence can change everything.

So here’s the thing

You have a choice to make.

Do you want to live a life of joy or a life of worry and anxiety?

Living a life of joy won’t be easy, but it is possible.

The reason joy is so important

It’s easy to have joy when everything in your life is falling into place, but what if everything wasn't? What if the answer ends up being no? What if the relationship ends?

You will experience pain in this life. You will suffer. We all will. God didn’t promise us a perfect life free of struggles.

But joy is an outward expression of trusting that God is a good Father no matter what. It’s trusting that He is good even when you can’t see His goodness and you don’t know how anything good could ever come out of your situation.

When you live with this deeply rooted joy in the Lord, it will attract the unbeliever.

That’s why it’s important.

Because the world will see something radically different in you.

When you walk in joy no matter what is going on around you, you will reflect the heart of the Father and people will be drawn to you.

So I want to remind you again, your joy cannot be stolen and you don’t have to wait until you feel it to choose it.

It’s already yours.
